Wordwork
Welcome to my workshop, wherein I wield my wordworking tools
in pursuit of excellence in the practice of wordsmithery.
I just moved in and I’m still getting settled, so furnishings are sparse,
as you can see. But come in, make yourself comfortable,
and let me offer you something from my heart.
I Want You to Know
that I love you.
I don’t care what size or shape or color you are.
I love you.
I don’t care where you were born
or where your parents and ancestors were born.
I love you.
You and your life are of great worth.
If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, ignore them—
they obviously don’t know you.
And who are they to make such judgments anyway?
I love you.
You have a unique set of talents and skills,
and I look forward to seeing how you use your gifts,
whether for the good of your neighborhood
or in the world at large.
I love you.
And if you make a mistake once in a while, so what?
We all make mistakes, sometimes big ones.
It’s not the end of the world.
You are still worth loving.
And I love you.
And when the going gets tough,
know that there are other people who love you too.
Let our love keep you going.
We love you.
So love yourself.

Adventures in Wordsmithery
In which I cogitate, contemplate, imaginate,
and otherwise exercise my mental muscles
trying to fathom what the heck
is going on in the world.
About Me
Creating a website was not on my (very short) list of retirement projects and activities. I have never had any kind of social-media account, and still don’t. Yet here I am, a few years into my retirement, hanging out my virtual shingle as an aspiring wordsmith. The impetus for establishing my site springs primarily from a desire to share my writing in the hope that something I say will resonate with someone else.
Deciding for certain whether and then how to go public turned out to be a more arduous process than I had anticipated. First, I did a ton of research on the options available: long-form-writing platforms, social media, a personal website. Then I asked myself questions about time commitment, budget, my technological aptitude, and ownership and control of my work. And, as questions do, those led to many more (along with doubts and wavering) before I got to the answers.
Ultimately, I chose to claim a room of my own on the Web. That decision made (whew!), it was time to actually set up the website. I did not have to learn how to write computer code (double whew!), but there was still a lot to learn, and more decisions and choices to be made. It’s an ongoing effort, requiring considerable patience—of me, with myself.
So now that I have a dedicated, if bare-bones, workroom, I can begin to ply my trade. As I envision it, my wordwork will take a variety of forms—prose, poetry, maybe even prayer—in which I offer my thoughts about people, events, or trends that spark a surge of synaptic activity in my brain.
That’s the plan anyway, but do note: the plan is subject to change since I am new at this.
